About the service
Galway City and County Library Services are provided by Galway County Council on behalf of the two local authorities, Galway City Council and Galway County Council. The service is committed to delivering a public library system that is inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of the community.
Libraries offer access to informational, educational, cultural, and recreational materials in a variety of formats and technologies. The service also upholds the public’s right to free access to information.
Library network
The Galway Library Service includes:
- 29 libraries across Galway City and County
- 3 purpose built, full-time libraries in Galway City (operated by the County Council on behalf of the City Council)
- 7 full-time libraries and 19 part-time libraries throughout the County, including on the islands
- A mobile library service that brings books to smaller towns and villages
- A schools library service that distributes books to over 200 primary schools
