🌟 What’s Happening?

Galway County Council, the National Transport Authority, and An Taisce Green Schools are working together to make the journey to Calasanctius College safer, greener, and more enjoyable for everyone. The school was selected for the Safe Routes to School Programme in 2021, and exciting improvements are now on the way.

The Safe Routes to School initiative helps schools encourage walking and cycling by improving safety at school entrances and along key routes. It’s all about reducing traffic, easing congestion, and creating safer spaces for students.

  • 🔗 Create better links between the school and nearby areas

🛠️ What’s Being Improved?

  • 🚦 New ramped controlled crossing at Castle Rd/Main Street
  • 🚫 Closure of nearby car park entrance to reduce traffic at the school
  • 🎨 SRTS branding added at key junctions for visibility
  • 🚶 Four new ramped uncontrolled crossings
  • 🦓 Tabletop ramp with zebra crossings at the school entrance and near Aldi
  • 🚧 Wider 2 m footpath and a new one‑way system on Castle Road
  • 🛑 Pencil bollards added for extra safety
  • 🚌 Picnic area transformed into a bus bay and set‑down zone
  • 🌿 New landscaping and placemaking features to brighten the area
