Emerging Mobile Technologies: 5G & Beyond
Mobile technologies have been improving for the past 30 years. Ireland’s first “2G” mobile network started in 1993. In the early 2000s, “3G” networks brought the first mobile internet services. Then, in the early 2010s, “4G” networks provided faster mobile internet.
The use of mobile technology is growing as the “Internet of Things” (IoT) becomes part of our daily lives. IoT means devices and systems that connect to the internet and talk to each other. This includes things like smart home devices, fitness trackers, and connected appliances. These technologies help with automation, remote control, and sharing data, making our lives easier and more efficient.
Now, “5G” is the latest mobile technology. In December 2022, the Government launched the Digital Connectivity Strategy. One goal is to have 5G in all populated areas by 2030.
