Starter Homes (Formally Affordable Housing)

Under the Starter Home Purchase Scheme (formally Affordable Housing Purchase Scheme), Galway County Council will assist eligible members of the public to purchase new homes at a reduced price, retaining an equity share in the property, for buyers who are seeking to purchase a newly built home but whose combined mortgage and deposit will not cover the market price of the newly built property.

Raheen Road, Athenry, County Galway  - A total of 37 homes comprising (19) 3 Bed Mid-Terrace, (16) 3 Bed End-Terrace, (2) 3 Bed Semi-Detached at Raheen Road, Athenry, County Galway are being made available for sale by Galway County Council at the above residential development through Starter Homes/Affordable Purchase/ arrangements under the Affordable Housing Act 2021 and Associated Affordable Housing Regulations.

🏡 An Móinéar Ard, Kinvara - Closed.

Galway County Council is announcing the delivery of 3 Part V affordable homes at the An Móinéar Ard development in Kinvara this week.  There will be 2 x 3 Bed Mid Terrace and 1 x 3 Bed End Terrace houses available.

The percentage of equity share retained by the Local Authority in the property will vary depending on the purchasing power of the applicant.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply for Starter Homes, applicants must:

  • Be a first-time buyer or meet the exceptions under the Fresh Start Principle, or
  • Own a dwelling which, due to its size, is not suited to the current accommodation needs of the applicant’s household
  • Each person included in the application must have the right to reside indefinitely in the State
  • Each applicant is assessed and must meet certain criteria which will be outlined prior to application

How do I apply?

Applications will only be accepted through an online application portal.

It is highly encouraged to register on the Consult platform PRIOR to the application goes live, as registeration and verification can take some time. 


On the day the portal opens:

  1. Complete the online application form
  2. Submit the requested documentation

The opening date and time will be advertised at least two weeks in advance.

Decisions will be made in accordance with eligibility criteria and Galway County Council’s Scheme of Priorities:
