N63 Abbeyknockmoy Village Active Travel

Proposed improvements to walking and cycling in Abbeyknockmoy, including new footpaths, a shared route, a raised crossing, and junction upgrades.

Scheme description

The proposed scheme in the village of Abbeyknockmoy, fully comprised with the 50kph speed zone, consists of a shared cycle and pedestrian facility which will provide a connection from  the existing rural cycleway (Abbeyknockmoy to Annagh Hill)  to the proposed Liss to Abbey cycleway which will run from the east of the village to the local church.
On the opposite side of the N63, a new raised footpath will be provided through the village connecting the existing the existing footpaths at the southern and northern ends.
The N63 junction with local road the L2128 will be realigned with curves of smaller radii with the intention of controlling traffic movements and speeds.
A pedestrian crossing with a raised table will be provided in the location of the shops and carparking area, just east of the L2128 junction.

Scheme objectives

  • To provide connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians to all amenities in the village of
    Abbeyknockmoy, including community facilities, businesses, schools and residential
    areas.
  • To improve road safety by segregating vulnerable road users from vehicular traffic.
  • To encourage the reduction of vehicle speeds through the 50km/h speed limit zone.

 

Planning permission

Galway County Council made an application under Part 8 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended) on the 8th of December 2023 for the N63 Abbeyknockmoy Village Active Travel Scheme, County Galway in accordance with Part 11 of the Planning & Development Act 2000 (as amended).
Development consent was approved on the 05/04/2024 at the Monthly Meeting of the Tuam Municipal District.

Compulsary purchase order


Galway County Council Compulsory Purchase Order No.1 2025 (Physical Infrastructure, Fire and Emergency Services and Climate Change) for the N63 Abbeyknockmoy Village Active Travel Scheme.

Galway County Council (hereinafter referred to as “the local authority”) in exercise of the powers conferred upon them by section 76 of the Housing Act, 1966, and the Third Schedule thereto, as extended by section 10 of the Local Government (No. 2) Act, 1960 as substituted by section 86 of the Housing Act, 1966 as amended by section 6 and the Second Schedule to the Roads Act, 1993 and as amended by the Planning and Development Act, 2000, has made an order entitled as above which is about to be submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála for confirmation.

If confirmed, the order will authorise the local authority to acquire compulsorily the land described in the First Schedule hereto for the purposes of the construction of the N63 Abbeyknockmoy Village Active Travel Scheme and all ancillary and consequential works including the provision of structures, road pavement, road markings, access and accommodation works, and other ancillary works, in the townlands of
