Declaring a vehicle off the road

How to declare your vehicle off the road and what documentation is needed.

Declaring a Vehicle Off the Road

If your vehicle will not be used and will not be kept in a public place, you can declare it off the road.

This can be done:

Important Points to Note:

  • The declaration must be made in advance.
  • The off-road period must be for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 12 months.
  • The declaration must cover full calendar months (e.g. from the 1st to the last day of a month).
  • You must make the declaration in the month your current motor tax expires.

If your vehicle is not currently taxed:

  • You must first pay any arrears and tax the vehicle for at least 3 months before you can declare it off the road.

If you purchase a new or second-hand vehicle and do not intend to use it immediately:

  • You must declare it off the road within 21 days of the purchase or registration date.
