When you sell or trade-in your car, you need to update the vehicle owner details with the Department of Transport. If you do not, you will be responsible for any charges, including motor tax, toll charges, and fines.
For vehicles registered after 1993
This online service allows real-time transfer of vehicle ownership between private vehicle owners and allows you to check key vehicle details before taking ownership.
Alternatively, complete and sign the back of your Vehicle Registration Certificate with the buyer. Send the certificate to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Computer Services Division in Shannon, Co. Clare. New VRC will be posted to the new owner in about a week.
- Sale/Trade-In to a Dealer: Complete Form RF105 with the dealer and give them your Vehicle Registration Certificate. If the dealer can notify the change online, you do not need to do anything else. If not, send Form RF105 to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Computer Services Division in Shannon, Co. Clare.
For vehicles registered before 1993
- Sale/Trade-In to a Dealer: Give the dealer the Logbook and send Form RF200 to the Motor Tax Office.
- Private Sale: Send the completed Change of Ownership Form RF105 and the Logbook to the Motor Tax Office.
*Please, remember, it is your responsibility to send the forms. Do not give the Vehicle Registration Certificate to the new owner, as you will still be liable for the vehicle.
