Westside Library Sensory Room

What is the Westside Library sensory room?

Sensory Rooms can help those who have learning difficulties, developmental disabilities or impairments to develop and engage their senses in a safe environment that builds up their confidence and abilities. 

The multi-sensory room in Westside Library includes a colour changing bubble column and lights, infinity tunnels and tactile panels. Overhead projectors including aura lights help to create a calm and comfortable environment. This specially designed room is a combination of a range of stimuli to aid, develop and engage the senses.

How to book the Westside sensory room

  • The Sensory Room at Westside Library is available to individuals, local groups and organisations for lawful public use on an equitable basis.  

  • The purpose of the room is to provide a safe, non-threatening environment to calm or stimulate individuals through each of the senses.  

  • Use of the room is completely free to registered library members. However, the room must be booked in advance.  

Booking can be made at the library desk, by phoning 091 509 091 or emailing westside@galwaycoco.ie 

  • Bookings can only be made with an adult library account and users under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. If you are not already a member of the library membership is free, we require proof of I.D and address to set up an account. 

  • Adults/Carers are at all times responsible for actively monitoring their young people or adults using the facilities. All carers booking with an organisation must be garda vetted. 

  • A Sensory room booking form/user policy form must be filled out by the adult or caregiver at the first session. Sessions are for 30 minutes and a maximum of 3 people per session.

Tuam

The sensory pod in Tuam Library aims to promote a safe and calming environment for its users. It is self-contained, autism friendly and is available to book for small groups through school or community groups. The pod contains mood lighting and soft furnishings and is complemented in the library by the addition of autism friendly overhead lighting which can be dimmed a suitable level for library users
