Housing assistance payment (HAP)

The housing assistance payment (HAP) is a social housing support provided by local authorities in Ireland.

What is HAP?

  • HAP stands for housing assistance payment.
  • It's a social housing support provided by your local authority.
  • The local authority pays your rent to your landlord each month, within certain limits.
  • You pay a weekly contribution towards the rent to the local authority.
  • You need to find your own private rented accommodation.
  • The tenancy agreement is between you and your landlord.
  • All private residential tenancies must be registered with the Residential Tenancies Board.
  • HAP allows you to work full-time and still receive housing support.

How to apply

  • First, you need to be approved for housing support.
  • Download the Housing Support Application Form.
  • Once approved, you'll get a HAP application form with two parts:
    • Section A for you to complete.
    • Section B for your landlord to complete.
