The textile industry is the second largest contributor to global pollution. Globally it is estimated that one full truckload of textiles goes to landfill or incineration every second while less than 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled into new products. Ireland is in line with the global trend of more textiles being consumed per person per year than ever before. This trend is unsustainable, and it is worth considering the alternatives in line with the Waste Pyramid:
Prevent and Reduce:
It is easy to reduce your own textile consumption by simply reflecting on what you really need before you buy.
Re-Use & Repair:
Before you buy, rummage through your wardrobe as we all have clothes we forgot we already own. You can also make a conscious choice to repair your clothes, either by learning to sew yourself or you can find a directory of repair services on www.repairmystuff.ie
Recycle:
Recent research from the Environmental Protection Agency found that textiles make up 9% of waste in the general waste bin. Here are some recycling options for your to consider as an alternative to disposal:
- Textiles/Clothes Banks are available at Bring Banks in many locations
- Textiles/Clothing can be brought to our Civic Amenity Sites
- Many Charity Shops accept good quality clothing for resale. You can find more information on https://charityretail.ie/shops/
- Resell your unwanted clothing through websites such as Depop and Vinted.
- Schools and Communities often organise clothes collections as a way of generating revenue.
Textiles are a key priority area for action to realize Ireland’s Circular Economy ambitions. In 2022, the Government established a Textile Advisory Group to explore options for textiles to come more into line with a Circular Economy. You can find out more at:
