How to report an abandoned vehicle:
To report an abandoned vehicle, please submit the following details to the Environment Section of Galway County Council:
- Vehicle registration
- Colour, Make and Model of vehicle
- Exact Location where the vehicle is abandoned
- The period that the vehicle has not been moved (must be up to 6 weeks)
We will investigate the matter. If the vehicle is deemed abandoned, we will issue a notification to the registered owner and may affix a notice to the vehicle.
Please note the following:
- We will only remove vehicles from public property. We will not enter private property to remove a vehicle, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
- Vehicles with no tax or insurance on public roads should be reported to the Gardai.
- Burned out vehicles should be reported to the Gardai.
- Vehicles in private estates will not be deemed abandoned.
How to properly dispose of unwanted vehicles:
You can deposit your unwanted car or small van free-of-charge to your nearest Authorised Treatment Facility where you will receive a Certificate of Destruction for the vehicle. This will also update all national vehicle files so that you will no longer receive motor tax reminders etc. For further details, please see the section on End of Life Vehicles at Waste Regulation
