Operational fire service

Galway Fire and Rescue Service provides emergency response across Galway, including fire-fighting, road traffic collisions, rescues from heights, water, and other emergencies.

Galway Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS)

Galway Fire and Rescue Service provides a 24/7/365 operational fire service from eleven fire stations strategically located throughout Galway City and County:

  • Galway City Headquarters
  • Athenry
  • Ballinasloe
  • Clifden
  • Gort
  • Loughrea
  • Mountbellew
  • Portumna
  • Tuam
  • Inis Mór
  • Carraroe

Personnel and Structure

GFRS is made up of nearly 200 staff across its 11 stations. The service includes Officers and Firefighters who undergo continuous training to maintain the highest standards of emergency response.

  • Each fire brigade is led by a Station Officer, supported by a Sub-Officer who deputises in their absence.
  • All members of the County brigades are employed on a part-time retained basis.
  • Galway City HQ employs both full-time and retained firefighters, and is also home to the Senior Fire Officers.

Equipment and Capabilities

GFRS operates a wide range of emergency response vehicles and equipment, including:

  • Fire tender appliances
  • Aerial ladder platforms
  • Water tankers
  • Hazardous materials (haz-mat) units
  • Incident command units
  • Utility vehicles

Each brigade includes one or more Driver Mechanics, depending on the number of appliances at the station.

Additional Support

Galway Fire and Rescue Service also supports Civil Defence operations, with volunteers coordinated from the Galway City Headquarters.
