Every October, National Fire Safety Week is held across the island of Ireland in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.
Fire Safety Week urges people to think about the potential fire risks in their homes and kicks off the start of a national media advertising campaign across radio, TV and social media platforms which will play out throughout the rest of the year.
Each year, Galway Fire and Rescue Service run campaigns to encourage people to install and test their smoke detectors and to look out for their wider community, particularly vulnerable persons.
During National Fire Safety Week, Galway Fire and Rescue Service will place advertisements and fire safety information in newspapers, on radio and TV and will set up various information stands in public venues and at fire stations throughout the City and County.
To accompany 2024's launch of Fire Safety week, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien announced a €500,000 investment on aprimary schools’ programme in 2024 and a further investment of €250,000 in the Community Smoke Alarm Scheme; €100,000 of which will provide specially-adapted smoke alarms for the Deaf and hard of hearing to be distributed by local Fire Authorities.
