Galway Sports Partnership

The aim of Galway Sports Partnership is to increase participation in physical activity among specific target groups across the county.

Main Functions of Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs)

  1. Information
    • Establish a consultative forum
    • Initiate research
    • Compile a sports directory and database
    • Identify needs and resources to support local planning
  2. Education
    • Provide quality education and training opportunities at local level
    • Offer training courses targeting volunteers
    • Facilitate access to sport-specific courses through National Governing Bodies (NGBs)
  3. Implementation
    • Develop a strategic plan for local sport
    • Appoint a professional administrator
    • Secure related support services
    • Select and adapt participation programmes to suit local needs
    • Increase the impact of national programmes delivered locally
    • Market and promote sport across the county

Key Aims

The key aims of the LSP are to increase participation in sport and ensure that local resources are used effectively. Desired outcomes include:

  • Club development
  • Volunteer training
  • Enhanced planning of sport at local level
  • Local directories of sports bodies and facilities
  • Stronger links between schools, clubs, communities, and NGBs
  • Increased participation, especially among target groups such as:
    • Older people
    • Girls and women
    • People with disabilities
    • Unemployed individuals
    • Residents of disadvantaged communities
