Active Parks initiative

Opportunities for the community to engage in physical activities in local parks and greenspaces.

One of the objectives of the Healthy Galway County plan is to make it easier for people to be active. To support this, the Active Parks Initiative, in partnership with Galway Sports Partnership (GSP), identified and approved three areas for the installation of Activator Fit Stick Trails in Galway County for 2024.

Five FitSticks trails have been introduced in Gort River Walk, Kilcornan Clarinbridge, Lawrencetown, Corribdale Park in Oughterard, and Tuam Palace Grounds, providing a structured walking experience and helping participants enhance mobility, balance, and overall fitness in a safe and supportive environment.

Each trail features designated warm-up and warm-down areas, as well as Strength Stations placed along the route to encourage additional movement and engagement.

Trails were identified based on usage of Activator Poles by active community groups in the area, aiming to facilitate accessible and enjoyable walking experiences, improving balance and gait pattern while reducing impact on hips and knees.
