What is Casual Trading?
Casual Trading allows for businesses and individuals to sell goods at a designated area at specified times in County Galway as outlined in our Casual Trading Bye Laws 1999 and Ballinasloe Town Council Bye Laws 2003.
What is a Casual Trading Licence?
Under the Casual Trading Act 1995, anyone engaging in casual trading must hold a Casual Trading Licence. It is an offence under this Act to trade casually without a valid casual trading licence.
How do I apply for a Casual Trading Licence?

What documents do I need to submit with my application for a Casual Trading Licence?
- Tax Clearance Access Number (TCAN)
- Letter of Approval from HSE National Environmental Health Service (if trading food items)
- 2 passport sized photos of proposed licence holder
- Expired Casual Trading Licence if a current Casual Trading Licence holder
- Public Liability Insurance – minimum level of €6.5m is required
Where and when can I trade if I have a Casual Trading Licence?
The Casual Trading Licence you are issued with will specify the designated area you are permitted to trade in.

Current licence holders renewing their licence can pay the required fee when submitting their application.
New applicants should not submit any payment until they are advised if their application has been successful or not.[LK1]
What is a Special Events Licence?
A Special Events Licence is a permit to allow market trading at or within the immediate vicinity of a special event/events as specified on the licence.
Applications for a casual trading licence for a special event will be advertised in the lead up to the event.
A separate Special Events Licence is required for each event. All interested parties must apply and be issued with a licence before trading is permitted.
How do I apply for a Special Events Licence?
An application form for a Special Events Licence must be completed and submitted to Galway County Council at least 2 weeks prior to the event. All Applications for Special Event Licences must be accompanied by:
- a current tax clearance certificate
- 2 passport photographs
- public liability insurance details
- HSE National Environmental Health Service letter (where appropriate)
