Vacant Site Register – Overview
Under the Urban Regeneration and Housing Act 2015, local authorities must keep a register of land that is:
- Suitable for housing, but and the majority of the site has not been in use (i.e. vacant) for an extended period of time.
In County Galway, this register was established on January 1st, 2017.
From January 2019, a vacant site levy (tax) applies to lands listed on the register.
What is a Vacant Site?
A site may be considered vacant if:
Residential Land:
- There is a need for housing in the area.
- The land is suitable for housing.
- Most of the site has been unused for a long time.
Regeneration Land:
- Most of the site has been unused for a long time.
- Its vacancy is negatively affecting the area’s character or amenities.
What Happens Next?
- Galway County Council will assess potential vacant sites.
- Landowners will be contacted during this process.
What Information is on the Register?
- A description and map of the site.
- Folio details (if registered land).
- Owner’s name and address.
- The market value of the site.
- Any other required information under the Act.
