Recording and Mapping Graveyards in County Galway
Galway County Council, along with Galway Rural Development, Forum Connemara, and many local community groups and schools, is working together to record and digitally map graveyards and the inscriptions on headstones.
This work takes a lot of time and effort, especially when dealing with old or hard-to-read headstones. The local knowledge of people in the area is very important, especially when it comes to recognising names and understanding the history of the place. All of the people and school groups involved are volunteers.
Although this project has been going on for many years, Galway County Council has recently improved the way the surveys are done by using new technology. This makes the process easier and faster, and helps to share the information more widely.
As a result, a new online tool called the "County Galway Burial Records" search application was launched on 14 August 2023. This new tool will replace the older Graveyards Search application once all the data has been moved over. Until then, both tools are available for people to use.
