What is the BHIS?
The BHIS provides grant funding for repair and conservation works to buildings that are Protected Structures under the Planning and Development Acts.
- Scheme Objectives The scheme is designed to:
- Support conservation works on historic structures across the country
- Promote the use of skilled conservation professionals and craftspeople
- Help maintain and safeguard Ireland’s built heritage
Grant Amounts Available
- Grants range from €2,500 to €50,000
- A special micro-grant stream is also available for routine maintenance and minor repairs
- New funding streams added in 2027 include:
- Vernacular buildings (traditional rural structures)
- Historic shopfronts
Application Window
- Open from: 28 July 2026
- Deadline to apply: Friday, 30 October 2026
- Submit applications to: conservationoffice@galwaycoco.ie
Who Can Apply?
- Owners and custodians of Protected Structures
- Structures must be listed on the Galway County Record of Protected Structures or meet eligibility under the Planning and Development Acts
To apply, you must complete and submit:
- BHIS 2027– Application Form A
- Method statement (see guidance booklet for what this should include). Make sure to read the full guidance before applying.
