Hoarding & scaffolding licences

Section 254 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 governs the issuing of a Hoarding, Fencing or Scaffolding Licence.

Licence for Hoarding, Fencing, or Scaffolding on a Public Road

Galway County Council may issue a licence for the construction of hoarding, fencing, or scaffolding on a public road.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit:

  • Plans and technical details showing the position, design, and capacity of the proposed structure.
  • Any additional information requested by Galway County Council.

Licence Conditions

  • The licence will be granted for a specific period and under conditions set by the Council.
  • If the structure is considered to be an obstruction or becomes unsafe, the Council may issue a written notice to:
    • Withdraw the licence
    • Require the removal of the structure at the licensee’s expense

Required Documentation

The application must include:

  • Public Liability Insurance:
    • Minimum cover: €6.4 million
    • Must include a specific indemnity to Galway County Council
  • Fees:
    • One year: €1,250
    • More than one year: €1,250 for each year
    • Less than one year: €125 for each month
