Active Travel Scheme – Church Road, Headford
Galway County Council has successfully delivered the Headford Church Road Active Travel Scheme, enhancing pedestrian safety and connectivity in the growing town of Headford, North Galway.
The project focused on Church Road and the access road to Presentation College, creating safer and more accessible routes between Headford National School, Presentation College, St. Mary's Church, Moyne Villa AFC, nearby residential areas, and local amenities. The scheme was designed to improve safety for schoolchildren, pedestrians, and cyclists while encouraging active travel.
Key works included the widening of footpaths, narrowing of the carriageway to help reduce vehicle speeds, installation of grass verges, and the provision of raised pedestrian crossings. A new raised zebra crossing outside the schools and church car park now provides a safer connection between these key destinations. Additional measures included improved pedestrian access points, junction tightening, school warning road markings, and bollards to prevent unsafe parking.
The project underwent extensive public consultation, resulting in several amendments to the original design to reflect community feedback. The collaborative approach adopted by Galway County Council's Active Travel Team and Project Engineer Tom Coleman was warmly welcomed by local councillors and community representatives.
The completed scheme provides a safer, more attractive environment for walking and cycling, strengthens links between key community facilities, and supports sustainable travel within Headford for residents, students, and visitors alike.
