Galway County Council’s Integration Team has announced that County Galway’s Africa Day 2026 celebration will take place at Tuam Palace Grounds on Saturday, 9 May, from 2pm to 5pm. The event promises a vibrant and inclusive afternoon, bringing communities together to celebrate the diversity, culture and contributions of African communities across the county.
Organised by the Galway County Local Authority Integration Team (LAIT) and supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the celebration will feature a varied programme of live music, multicultural performances, African cuisine, children’s activities and community stalls. Designed as a free, family-friendly event, organisers are encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to attend and enjoy what is expected to be a lively and welcoming occasion.
Africa Day is marked annually around the world to commemorate the founding of the African Union in 1963 and to celebrate the rich heritage, achievements and cultural traditions of the 54 nations of Africa. In Ireland, all 31 local authorities host Africa Day events, showcasing a wide range of cultural, artistic and community-led activities that highlight intercultural exchange and inclusion.
The Tuam event is being delivered in collaboration with members of Galway’s African communities, reflecting a strong partnership approach that places local voices and cultural expression at the heart of the celebration. Building on the success of previous years, organisers hope this year’s event will further strengthen community connections and provide an opportunity for people to learn, share and celebrate together.
Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Councillor David Collins, has encouraged people from across the county to take part in what he described as “an uplifting and inspiring” celebration, noting its importance in fostering understanding and bringing people together in a positive and engaging way.
Those attending are advised to bring a refillable water bottle and sunscreen to ensure a comfortable day. Anyone requiring assistance with transport or seeking further information is encouraged to contact the Integration Team at integration@galwaycoco.ie.
