Modernising the Electoral Register

Ireland’s electoral register is being modernised through a new national system to improve accuracy, efficiency, and accessibility.

Overview

The electoral register, Ireland’s official list of those eligible to vote, is being modernised through the introduction of the Local Government Electoral Registration System (LGERS) project.

Traditionally, each local authority maintained its own register. The LGERS project will unify these into a single national system, called Voter.ie, improving accuracy, efficiency, and ease of updating.

This major reform is being delivered locally by Galway County Council and nationally in partnership with Ireland’s 30 other local authorities.

Background

Galway County Council is legally responsible for maintaining an up-to-date and accurate electoral register, continuously adding, removing, or updating entries as needed.

The Electoral Reform Act 2022 provides the legal foundation for modernising how the register is managed and how people register to vote.

Electors must provide their PPSN, Eircode, and date of birth when registering at www.checktheregister.ie, helping to prevent duplicates and improve accuracy. Older records without this information have resulted in “legacy issues” such as duplicate or outdated entries.

Galway County Council is intensifying efforts to clean the register ahead of the 2025 Presidential Election and the move to Voter.ie in 2026.

Work Underway

  • Letters have been sent to electors with potential duplicate entries.
  • If you received one, please respond promptly by email, freepost, or call 091 509310 to confirm your details.
  • If someone in your household has recently moved away or passed away, please contact the Register of Electors Team so the register can be updated accordingly.

Galway County Council takes great care when updating the register and only removes entries after thorough checks.

Your Responsibility

  • It’s your responsibility to inform the Council of any changes, such as moving house or changing citizenship.
  • Under the Electoral Reform Act 2022, if an elector doesn’t respond after three contact attempts, their name may be removed.
  • Don’t miss your chance to vote — reply to the letter you received and encourage others to do the same.
