Keeping Children Safe – Our Committment
At Galway County Council, we are committed to keeping children safe when they use our services. We want every child to feel welcome, respected, and protected. We have two key documents that guide how we do this:
Child Protection & Welfare Policy and Procedures
This policy explains how we work to protect children from abuse, in line with the Children First Act 2015 and Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children (2017).
It sets out:
- The steps we take to keep children safe
- What staff and volunteers must do if they are worried about a child
- How we respond to concerns or reports of abuse
This policy is supported by our Corporate Child Safeguarding Statement, which is signed by the Chief Executive. It shows our commitment to child safety at the highest level.
Child Safeguarding Statement
This document explains how we work every day to protect children from harm and promote their wellbeing.
It includes:
- Our Approach: We put children first. We treat all children with care and respect, and we do not tolerate abuse or discrimination.
- Staff and Volunteers: Everyone working with or for the Council – including contractors and community groups – must adhere to strict child protection guidelines. This includes Garda vetting, training, and codes of conduct.
- Reporting Concerns: If someone is worried about a child’s safety, they are encouraged to report it. They can contact the Designated Child Protection Liaison Officer (DCPLO) within Galway County Council. Contact details for Tusla (the Child and Family Agency) and guidance is also included.
