Deposit Return Scheme

Information on the Deposit Return Scheme

Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme is operated by Re-turn, and aims to encourage recycling of plastic bottles, aluminium and steel drinks containers.   It works by charging consumers a small deposit on these containers, which is refunded upon their return to designated collection points. These are typically reverse vending machines at retailers such as supermarkets where the machine issues you a receipt for the deposit amount, which can be redeemed at that store.

Why the scheme has been introduced in Ireland:

The aims of the scheme are to significantly increase recycling rates for plastic bottles and aluminium cans, reduce litter, and promote a Circular Economy.    Through the Deposit Return Scheme, aluminium cans can be recycled infinitely, while PET plastic bottles can be recycled multiple times.  Statistics from Re-turn show 798 million more containers are now being recycled each year compared to before the scheme began.   Recycling rates for drinks containers have risen from just 49% to an estimated 91%.

It has also provided a new fundraising avenue for community groups, with drinks containers being collected and donated to support local worthy causes. Communities and event organisers who want to fundraise through Deposit Return for ‘Return for Children’ or their own chosen initiatives can get further guidance on how to do so at https://re-turn.ie/community/
