Civic Amenity Sites are locations where the public can dispose of various household waste materials, including recyclable items and general waste, for a small fee. Galway County Council provides three Civic Amenity Sites in Tuam, Clifden and Ballinasloe for households within the functional area of Galway County Council. These sites are managed by Barna Recycling on behalf of Galway County Council.
What can you bring to Civic Amenity Sites:
Bulky Household Waste Items
For example, couches, chairs, beds, carpets.
CD’s, DVD’s and Hard Drives
Please note that hard drives must be erased before disposal.
Green Waste
This is charged at Small Van, Large Van, and Axle Rates
Hazardous Waste
For example, aerosols, batteries, household medicines (no sharps), household and garden chemicals and cleaners, motoring products, engine oils and oil filters, paints, DIY products, vegetable oils. All these items must be in their original fully labelled packaging, otherwise they will not be accepted. These items contain dangerous materials which could cause serious damage to the environment and human health if not managed properly.
Household Recyclable Items
- Glass: bottles and jars sorted by colour
- Flat Glass: mirrors, windows, door glass, greenhouse glass (not broken drinking glass which should be disposed of in your black bin).
- Metal: clean and dry cans, tins, scrap metal.
- Textiles: clothing, shoes, and other textiles such as clean bed linen.
- Hard Plastics Items: clean and dry household items, for example plastic buckets, toys, pots, containers, chairs, garden furniture.
- Paper and Cardboard: books, newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes, tetra pak containers.
Timber
This consists of treated and untreated wood and laminates.
WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment)
For example, fridges & freezers, tv’s, washing machines and other white goods, CFL and LED light bulbs, fluorescent tubes & lamps, laptops, computers, electric power tools, cables, hairdryers, etc. If a product needs a battery or power supply to work properly, it is defined as WEEE which is free to deposit at Civic Amenity Sites.
