Galway County Council adopted Waste Management Byelaws in 2019 which apply to homes and businesses in County Galway. The Council carry out inspections to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Byelaws. The principal requirement of the byelaws is for all homes and businesses to ensure that waste arising from their property is collected by an Authorised Waste Collector.
How householders can legally manage their waste:
1. You can sign up with an authorised waste collector operating in County Galway – check these here https://www.nwcpo.ie/permitsearch.aspx
2. You can separate waste into recyclable, organic and landfill and bring it to an authorised waste facility such as a Civic Amenity Site. You must keep receipts.
3. You can share a bin. You will need to have proof of the sharing arrangement. The bin sharing agreement form can be downloaded here:
How householders can legally separate their waste:
A private residence or business must also ensure that the segregation and storage of waste pending collection complies with the byelaws. In this regard, inspections also check that a household is separating their waste in accordance with the requirements of the Byelaws:

Black bin /bag (Landfill):
- Dirty or contaminated packaging
- Bagged, cold ashes.
