Green Schools Programme

Supporting schools to promote sustainability and environmental education through the Green Schools programme.

Green Schools is an international programme run in Ireland by An Taisce and supported by local authorities. It encourages whole-school action for the environment.

What we do:

  • We support all registered schools participating in the Green Schools programme.
  • Primary, secondary, and third-level institutions are invited to take part.
  • The programme promotes environmental action across the entire school community.
  • It integrates sustainable practices into daily school life.
  • Green Schools serves as both an awareness initiative and an awards scheme.

Other student and youth group initiatives:

  • We deliver and support environmental programmes in schools and with youth groups.
  • The Environmental Awareness Officer provides advice on litter management, waste reduction, and other environmental themes.
  • Pre-schools and childcare facilities are also encouraged to participate in environmental projects.
  • We work in partnership with agencies such as An Taisce, VOICE Ireland, and Leave No Trace to enhance these programmes.
  • Environmental workshops and competitions are organised annually.
