In Ireland, it is an offence under the Litter Pollution Act 1997 for dog owners not to clean up after their pets in public places, with fines of up to €150 on the spot.
Owners Obligations:
Section 22 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997 As Amended makes it an offence for the person in charge of a dog not to clean up when their dog fouls in a public place. This applies to the following;
- Public roads
- Footpaths
- Parks and beaches
- Schools/Sports Grounds
Enforcement:
Our Community Warden Service monitor dog fouling in public areas and can act against owners. Failure of a person in charge of a dog to remove dog waste from a public place can lead to an on-the-spot fine of €150. If convicted in court, fines of up to €4000 can be applied.
Dog Fouling Campaign – ‘Remember If they Poop, You Scoop!’
This initiative encourages dog owners to act responsibly and always clean up after their dog. It also seeks to address the impact of dog fouling on public health and address civic pride.
Dog waste bags dispenser units and audio devices are in place across our towns, villages, and amenity areas across the county.
