Control of Dogs Complaints

How to report issues such as excessive barking or livestock attacks

Excessive Barking / Noise Complaints

If a dog’s barking is causing a nuisance, follow these steps:

  1. Speak to the dog owner to make them aware of the issue.
  2. If the barking continues and the issue is unresolved, you may file a formal complaint.

How to File a Complaint

  • Download and complete the Barking Dog Complaint Form
  • Submit the completed form to your local District Court
  • This process is governed by the Control of Dogs Acts 1986 & 1992

Attacks on Livestock

Under the Control of Dogs Act, dog owners must keep their dogs under effectual control at all times. If a dog attacks livestock, the owner may be held liable for any financial losses incurred by the farmer.

Farmers should report incidents to:

  • Galway County Council’s Dog Warden Service
  • An Garda Síochána
  • The Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA)
  • Their veterinary practice

📘 The IFA has published a guide for farmers on what to do if their sheep are attacked by dogs:
