Information, support and resources on menopause.
Healthy County Galway is working to improve women's health and wellbeing across the county.
Women’s health was identified as a key priority in the Healthy County Galway Plan 2022–2025, particularly in improving access to information, strengthening community connections, and supporting women at different stages of life.
In response to this, the Healthy County Galway Empowering Women’s Health Programme was developed to provide accessible, relevant and practical health information for women across the county. The programme aims to support women to better understand their health, build confidence in making informed decisions, and connect with local supports and services in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Empowering Women's Health talk series
In March 2025, Healthy County Galway launched the Empowering Women’s Health Programme, a talk series livestreamed to community centres that provides accessible and relevant health information for women. The programme was delivered in partnership with Comhar na nOileáin and Forum Connemara, helping to reach communities where access to services and information can be more limited.
The first series featured expert-led talks, broadcast across rural County Galway, including the Aran Islands. Topics included nutritional health, gynaecological health, physical activity, pelvic health, and complementary approaches to health.
Sessions offered opportunities for discussion, allowing participants to ask questions, share experiences, and engage directly with the experts. This approach aimed to support women in understanding their health, making informed choices, and building confidence in accessing advice and services.
A key strength of the series was its community-based approach. Each session created space for informal conversation, helping to reduce isolation and support social wellbeing.
Approach and impact
Following positive feedback and increased interest, the programme ran again in Autumn 2025 and returned in Spring 2026.
Alongside the talks, Connect Cafés were established in locations in partnership with Comhar na nOileáin and Forum Connemara. These provide a relaxed setting for women to meet, continue conversations, and build local connections.
Looking forward
The Women’s Health Programme continues to develop in response to feedback and local need.
Work is ongoing with community organisations to support the development of local women’s groups where there is interest. These groups can lead to further activities such as classes, workshops, and peer-led initiatives that support women’s health and wellbeing at community level.
Future plans include a women's health webinar which participants can take part in from the comfort of their own home, as well as future iterations of the talk series with expanded speakers and topics.
