Mending Hearts is a creative arts programme designed to support people recovering from heart conditions and stroke. It offers a series of gentle, welcoming workshops where participants can explore art as a way to relax, express themselves, and connect with others.

Launched in 2024 and funded by Creative Ireland, the Mending HeArts Project is a partnership between Healthy Ireland County Galway, Saolta Arts, HSE West and North West, Galway City Council, Galway County Council, and Croí Heart and Stroke Charity as part of the Creative Health and Wellbeing Programme.

Workshops include activities such as drawing, collage, printmaking, and mixed media. All sessions are facilitated by trained artists and are tailored to suit participants at various stages of recovery. No prior experience in art is required, and all materials are provided.

Workshops are currently taking place across Galway City and County, including:

  • University Hospital Galway
  • Merlin Park University Hospital
  • Portiuncula University Hospital
  • Croí House, Newcastle, Galway
  • Ballinasloe Library
  • Loughrea Library
  • Additional community venues in rural County Galway

In addition to current workshops, the programme includes training and capacity-building for artists to work in healthcare environments. This supports the development of a sustainable model for arts in health, with potential for expansion across the West and North West Health Region.

How to take part

If you or someone you know is recovering from a heart condition or stroke and would like to take part in upcoming workshops, you can get in touch with the organisers by emailing saoltaarts@hse.ie

Participation is free of charge, and sessions are open to those recovering from cardiac or stroke-related conditions. Healthcare professionals may also refer patients to the programme.
