What is the Traveller Interagency Group (TIG)?
The TIG of Galway City and County has been established to improve the situation of the local Traveller community and support public service providers in this objective, by fostering collaboration among various agencies and stakeholders. The group aims to ensure that the needs of the Traveller community are identified and addressed in a coordinated and efficient manner across the full range of policy fields, respecting their rights, culture, and traditions.
The purpose of the TIG is to promote the welfare and well-being of the Traveller community in Galway City and County, and to facilitate and monitor delivery of public services and cross-agency collaboration to meet the needs of the Traveller community and progress equality, human rights and social inclusion for the Traveller community.
Who is in the group?
Membership of the TIG is made up of senior level representatives from relevant statutory, non-statutory, and Traveller organisations, including but not limited to:
• The Council (Housing Department, Community Department, Local Community Safety Services)
• Education Sector (GRETB)
• Health Services (THU, Traveller Mental Health)
• Traveller Advocacy Organisations (Galway Traveller Movement, Bru Bhríde, Traveller youth services – Two members each)
• Non-Statutory Representatives (Galway City Partnership, GRD)
• Department of Social Protection (Intreo)
• Tusla (CYPSC)
Other agencies and stakeholders may be invited to participate as needed, based on the issues under discussion and any subgroups formed.
What are the roles and responsibilities of the TIG members?
• Attending meetings and contributing to discussions in a constructive and collaborative manner, based on shared values identified by the TIG.
• Sharing information relevant to the Traveller community's needs and challenges.
• Supporting the implementation of agreed actions and initiatives.
• Reviewing and providing feedback on policies, strategies, and plans that impact the Traveller community.
• Acting as a conduit for communication between the TIG and the organisations they represent.
• Advocating for the necessary resources and support for services and initiatives for the Traveller community.
