Galway County Council – Energy and Emissions Commitments
Galway County Council, along with all public sector entities, is required to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 51%
- Improve energy efficiency by 50%
Target year: 2030
Energy Coordination and Community Engagement
To meet these targets, Galway County Council has established a new internal structure to:
- Coordinate efforts across departments
- Share knowledge and best practices
- Support community engagement
- Ensure initiatives are impactful and inclusive
The Energy Team is actively working to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency across:
- Council buildings
- Vehicle fleet
- Public lighting systems
Progress to Date
- Energy Efficiency: A 42% improvement has been achieved since the 2009 baseline.
- Emissions Reduction: Background work is ongoing on a series of building upgrade projects, to be implemented via the SEAI Pathfinder and EXEED Programmes.
Energy Management System
Galway County Council is working towards establishing an ISO 50001-accredited Energy Management System. As part of this process, Significant Energy Users have been identified, including:
- Fleet
- Public Lighting
- Leisure Centres
- Other large buildings
