Our Energy Usage

Galway County Council continues to work toward reducing energy consumption.

Galway County Council – Energy and Emissions Commitments

Galway County Council, along with all public sector entities, is required to:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 51%
  • Improve energy efficiency by 50%
    Target year: 2030

Energy Coordination and Community Engagement

To meet these targets, Galway County Council has established a new internal structure to:

  • Coordinate efforts across departments
  • Share knowledge and best practices
  • Support community engagement
  • Ensure initiatives are impactful and inclusive

The Energy Team is actively working to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency across:

  • Council buildings
  • Vehicle fleet
  • Public lighting systems

Progress to Date

  • Energy Efficiency: A 42% improvement has been achieved since the 2009 baseline.
  • Emissions Reduction: Background work is ongoing on a series of building upgrade projects, to be implemented via the SEAI Pathfinder and EXEED Programmes.

Energy Management System

Galway County Council is working towards establishing an ISO 50001-accredited Energy Management System. As part of this process, Significant Energy Users have been identified, including:

  • Fleet
  • Public Lighting
  • Leisure Centres
  • Other large buildings
