Community Climate Action Programme Fund

Supporting Galway to build low carbon communities.

What is the Community Climate Action Programme Fund?

The Community Climate Action Fund (CCAF) was established to provide assistance and financial support to projects which will help Ireland achieve its climate and energy targets. The Programme will roll out in two phases, with the first phase completed and Phase 2 now underway.

Community Climate Action Programme Fund 2025 (Phase 2)

We were delighted to announce the official launch of the next round of the Community Climate Action Programme Fund in 2025 — a Government of Ireland initiative to support community and voluntary groups in taking meaningful climate action locally. The fund opened for applications online on October 21st 2025 and closed on December 16th 2025.

Phase 2 of the programme sees local authorities continue to partner directly with community groups to deliver projects that contribute to Ireland's climate and energy targets, while supporting communities to scale up local climate action initiatives.

Projects supported under the programme address 5 key themes:

  1. Community energy
  2. Travel
  3. Food and waste
  4. Shopping and recycling
  5. Local climate and environmental action

The programme is administered through the network of Community Climate Action Officers (CCAOs) in local authorities, who provide guidance, support and practical assistance to communities – seeking to become lower-carbon and more sustainable.

Galway County Council was awarded €858,575.72 on this occasion, providing 55 Community Groups with Climate Action Funding across the County.

The full list of successful projects in County Galway is available to view below.

Community Climate Action Programme Fund 2024 (Phase 1)

In the first round of funding, €762,000 was made available to support communities in County Galway in undertaking climate action measures. Applications closed in late February 2024, with Galway County Council receiving 55 applications from groups seeking funding support for a range of projects, including the retrofitting of buildings, renewable energy generation, biodiversity enhancement and the circular economy. An independent evaluation committee screened and evaluated these applications, submitted to the Minister of the Environment, Climate and Communications for consideration, ultimately granting fund money of €762,000 to 32 community groups based in Galway County.

We were thrilled to see such ambitious projects put forward and delighted to see the successful projects rolled out across the County. It was a pleasure to work with the successful applicants throughout Phase 1 of the programme, and we are proud that all funded projects have now been successfully completed, delivering lasting benefits for communities and the environment.
