What is the HTB / BHIS Grant?
The Historic Thatched Buildings Grant is part of the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) and aims to protect the unique heritage of Irelands thatched buildings. The scheme is administered by Galway County Council on behalf of the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage.
Who Can Apply?
Owners or occupiers of historic thatched buildings. Refer to section 3.1 of the guidance booklet
for full eligibility.
Eligible Structures
- Any historic thatched building (domestic or commercial)
- Structures within an Architectural Conservation Area (ACA)
- Buildings within the setting of a National Monument, in exceptional cases.
Eligible Works
- Thatching works to the roof
- Related works, such as chimney repairs, that are necessary to complete the roof works Required Documents
To apply, you must submit the following:
- Completed Application Form A
- Comprehensive Method Statement
- Letter from a Thatcher confirming dates of work (to be completed by mid-October 2025)
- Application Checklist
- Note: Incomplete applications will not be accepted after the deadline.

Funding Available
- Up to 80% of the total cost, max. €20,000
- Please note: most grants awarded will be less than 80%
Timeline
- Applications due: 3 January 2025
- Funding notification: February 2025
- Works must be completed: By October 2025
