On 26 July 2024, funding for the Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2025 was announced by Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan. This year, the scheme has been updated to include earlier application dates and increased grant funding to support more effective heritage conservation.
What is the BHIS?
The BHIS provides grant funding for repair and conservation works to buildings that are Protected Structures under the Planning and Development Acts.
- Scheme Objectives The scheme is designed to:
- Support conservation works on historic structures across the country
- Promote the use of skilled conservation professionals and craftspeople
- Help maintain and safeguard Ireland’s built heritage
Grant Amounts Available
- Grants range from €2,500 to €50,000
- A special micro-grant stream is also available for routine maintenance and minor repairs
- New funding streams added in 2025 include:
- Vernacular buildings (traditional rural structures)
- Historic shopfronts
Application Window
- Open from: 26 July 2024
- Deadline to apply: Friday, 27 September 2024
- Submit applications to: conservationoffice@galwaycoco.ie
Who Can Apply?
- Owners and custodians of Protected Structures
- Structures must be listed on the Galway County Record of Protected Structures or meet eligibility under the Planning and Development Acts
