European Mobility Week 2008

“CLEAN AIR FOR ALL” was the central theme for European Mobility Week 2008 which was the first year for Galway County Council to participate in European Mobility Week. 

The Council developed an ambitious programme of events covering all of the sustainable transport themes supported by a dedicated media campaign including newspaper supplements, dedicated radio shows, and a campaigning website.

Events delivered by the Council to mark European Mobility Week 2008 included the inaugural County Galway Primary Schools Cycling Championship, Free Cycling Workshops including Dr. Bike, Mobility Health Awareness Seminars, ‘Pedestrian Paradise’ for Main Street, Loughrea, ‘Animal Magic’ in Ballinasloe, ‘Living Streets’ in Tuam and a Community ‘Bulb Plantathon’ in Athenry.

Promising Newcomer Performs Outstandingly Well – European Commission

The European Commission acknowledged the effort of Galway County Council in promoting European Mobility Week in September 2008 with the Council being judged the best Irish entrant and  placed in the top ten of the 2,102 local authorities that officially participated across 39 countries and involving 220 million citizens.

A panel of independent experts regarded Galway County Council as a “promising newcomer to the European Mobility Week campaign” with the Council having paid close attention to the involvement of stakeholders during the preparation and organisation of EMW, as well as to the comprehensiveness of the action plan, including activities on all the main transport modes.

96.4% think European Mobility Week is a good or very good idea

The findings of an opinion poll, undertaken by the Council during European Mobility Week 2008 indicates overwhelming support for the initiative with 96.4% of the interviewees thinking that European Mobility Week / ‘In Town Without My Car’ is a good or very good idea.

82.1% of the interviewees indicated that the initiative (European Mobility Week) helps people to leave their cars at home with 49.6% of interviewees using other means of transport for their journeys to work/school during the Week. 

The poll also confirmed significant support for ‘In Town Without My Car’ & the Car Free Days with 68.8% wanting the car free zone to be bigger in following years.
