The M6 Ballinasloe to Athlone road scheme opened on 23rd July 2009, five weeks ahead of the contractual completion date. It was opened by an Taoiseach, Mr. Brian Cowen. The below budget cost of €210 million, represented a significant investment in the border midlands and western region. Funding for the scheme was provided under the National Development Plan 2007-2013 and part financed by the European Union.
