Leenane Opening Times

Leenane In Irish, Leenane is named líonán-chinnmhara – the tide-filling spot at the head of the sea, a most apt and poetical place name.
The roads from Maam, Clifden, Galway and Westport all meet here making it an important junction and meeting point. And now to add to the warmth and charm and the universality of this special location, a public library service has been introduced.

It has been remarked that this library facility in Leenane stands thoughtfully upright and confident in its role as a provider of fact, information, ideas, local history, and literature to the people Leenane and to visitors to the area.
If you are a visiting writer or artist and you would like to contribute to the library life during your stay with a reading or an exhibit please call 087-0523242.

Wittgenstein2.jpg
The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein lived in Leenane for a six month period during 1948. While there he finished writing his Philosophical Investigations. An image of Wittgenstein hangs in Leenane Library.

He said that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” The limit of everyman’s language means the limit of his or her world. The library, through its collection of words and writings from everywhere, provides the opportunities for expanding all our worlds.
