Take a walk on the wild side- National Biodiversity Week events in Galway!

In order to celebrate Ireland’s second National Biodiversity Week, the ‘People and Nature’ Project has helped to organise a range of nature and wildlife themed events around Galway County . A variety of talks and walks will be held over the weekends between the 17th and 25th May, and will be led by some of Galway’s top local experts!

In simple terms, biodiversity refers to the variety of life on earth, including plants, animals, microbes and man! Galway is one of the hotspots of biodiversity in Europe, as we harbour a large number of the rarest plants, animals, and habitats. National Biodiversity Week is our chance to celebrate the wonderful nature on our doorstep, and to highlight some of the wonderful conservation work that is being carried out by some of our local communities.

All events are free of charge, and all are welcome to attend, so do please come along and enjoy the nature that Galway has to offer!

Don’t worry if you miss out on any of these events, as the People and Nature project has a whole range of other events and activities planned throughout the summer months. To obtain a brochure in Irish or English visit www.galway.ie , and click on the heritage section.

If you have any queries about these events or any aspect of the People and Nature Project, please contact Nick Marchant, Project Manager, Applied Ecology Unit, Centre for Environmental Science, NUI, Galway. Phone 091 493863 or email elaine.oriordan@nuigalway.ie

‘People and Nature’ is the theme of the Galway County Biodiversity Project. The aim of the project is to develop and implement the Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP), which sets out our objectives and actions to promote, protect and enhance biodiversity in County Galway for the benefit of both people and nature.

People and Nature is a Partnership Project run between Galway County Council and NUI, Galway with the support of Galway Rural Development, The Heritage Council and the Galway County Heritage Forum.
