Household Waste/Bin Collection
The weekly household waste collection service in County Galway is provided by private sector operators in County Galway. Various companies provide waste collection services throughout the County. The service available in the County is based on a landfill and recycling collection service on alternate weeks. Click here for more info.
Recycling Centres
Galway County Council operate 3 Recycling Centres in at Clifden, Tuam and Ballinasloe.
The opening hours for Clifden Recycling Centre are Saturday and Monday ONLY from 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m. Contact the Recycling Centre at 095-30958 during these hours.
The opening hours for Tuam Recycling Centre are Monday -Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:15p.m. and Friday and Saturday 830a.m. to 3:45p.m. Contact the Recycling Centre at 093-26438 during these hours.
The opening hours for Ballinasloe Recycling Centre are 8:30a.m. to 4p.m. Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday. Contact the Recycling Centre at 087-0506291 during these hours.
Please note that all Recycling Centres are closed on Bank Holidays.

Bring banks
The Council has been directly involved in the provision of 90 sites for the recycling of glass and beverage cans around the County. There is a great demand for such centres in the County and every effort will be made to ensure the widespread availability of such recycling centres. Any community which is interest in having this facility should first agree a suitable site with the Area Engineer and then contact the Environment Section requesting to be included for consideration in any expansion of the scheme.

Composting
Everyone with a garden should compost. Composting turns organic household waste such as teabags, coffee grounds, raw vegetable peelings, fruit and garden waste into a valuable product for your garden and can reduce the amount of household waste you send to landfill by up to 50%! Compost bins are available to purchase from Galway County Council at cost price of €45 (incl delivery to any part of the County). Click here for more info.
Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations (SI 508 of 2009)
These Regulations are designed to promote the segregation and recovery of food waste arising in the commercial sector. They will facilitate in particular the achievement of the targets set out in Directive 99/31/EC on the landfill of waste, for the diversion of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) from landfill sites to composting and anaerobic digestion plants and to other forms of biological treatment.
The Regulations impose obligations on the major producers of food waste to segregate these materials and make them available for separate collection service (commonly known as a brown bin service in Ireland). Alternatively, these materials can be on the premises where they arise under specified conditions.

Prevention
It is generally accepted that the excessive generation of waste is bad for the environment and therefore we should try to reduce as much waste arising as possible. This will limit excessive resource use and will assist in reducing on environmental damage. Preventing waste before it’s created does just that and it can also help reduce the cost of disposal because if you don’t create it you don’t have to dispose of it!
