Monitoring of Water Quality

The Council has it's own programme of monitoring the quality of water in it's area and it also contributes to the E.P.A. Regional Laboratory in this regard. All reports of alleged water pollution are investigated and where sufficient evidence can be obtained, prosecution under the Water Pollution Acts are instituted. In addition, the Council are currently formulating a Western River Catchment Management Strategy in co-operation with the relevant state, farming and fishery bodies. This includes the carrying out of a Farm Task Survey to examine the use of fertilisers and their possible impact on the waters of Lough Corrib and its catchment.
