County Mayor Pays Tribute to the four representatives in the All Island Pride of Place Competition
Councillor Michael Mogie Maher, Mayor of County Galway stated “Councillors are aware of the high level of Community and Voluntary activity throughout the County and competitions such as Pride of Place give great encouragement at parish and community level. I am sure that the Judges were highly impressed by the Communities which represented County Galway over the past week of judging. County Galway’s four participating communities were busy over the last 3 months preparing their itineraries, presentations, outlining achievements and pride initiatives. Judging day is a special occasion and provided an opportunity for this year’s communities to show pride in their respective areas by supporting organised events.”
Judging in this year’s competition took place last Thursday, the 18th of August in Letterfrack and on Friday the 19th of August on Inishbofin. The Ireland Reaching Out South – East Galway Diaspora Pilot Project under the ‘Community Tourism Initiative’ were judged on Monday morning the 22nd of August in Loughrea and the final visit was to Ballinasloe that afternoon at 2pm for their ‘Community Response to Safety’ initiatives.
The Mayor further stated “the Pride of Place initiative is a great opportunity for showcasing community efforts at a national level. Community group activities commonly bridge the gap in areas where public services and / or facilities may not reach. The Pride of Place initiative presents communities with an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and provides a powerful motivational boost.” The results of this years competition will be announced at the Co-Operation All-Island Pride of Place Gala Awards Ceremony in Gorey, Co.
